Spending time with the old folks

The weekend wasn’t exactly rock and roll but then again that was never on the menu.   But I mustn’t complain as the weekend turned out better than I anticipated.  The first drama on Saturday morning was the discovery that dad had forgotten to pack his electric shaver.  Phil’s mum was cross because this was only thing he had to remember to pack.  George actually hadn’t forgotten his shaver but he had failed to bring the electric lead for it.   After breakfast was cleared, Phil took them into Northampton to find an Argos which is where they wanted to go.  I stayed home alone as I had some phone calls and some internet stuff to do.  They were gone for at least a couple of hours and I was beginning to get worried when they car pulled up just after midday.  Apparently Northampton was busy and the sat nav got confused and took them all over the town.

We took mum and dad for fish and chips at The Manor. As with the last time we went there, the restaurant wasn’t packed but we had to wait quite a while for our food.  It was a glorious afternoon so me and mum set ourselves up in the garden whilst Phil and his dad went into watch the qualifying.  I was surprised at just how hot the sun was, I think we are sheltered from the wind in-between the caravans.  Mum did a sandwich tea in their caravan and then we both settled down in our own caravans to watch TV.

On Sunday we left Overstone and drove to MK; mum and dad wanted to get some Geona  cake from the BW store in Bletchley.  They’d brought some from there on a visit with us before and said it was the best Geona cake they’d tasted since the war days.  We picked up a few bits and pieces in BW and then we took them to the GP flat so they could see our renovation.  Thankfully they made it up and down the wobbly stairs and I think they were impressed by our efforts, or at least they said they were.  Obviously a different age range and so very different tastes and certainly very different to when they first helped Phil decorate in the late 80’s.  We had just had time for a cup of coffee at the flat before making our way to Sue’s at midday.

I had mentioned taking Bet and George to Sue’s for coffee so that she could meet them but she insisted on cooking Sunday lunch for us all.  A very kind offer indeed and I agreed without too much of a fight.  I was slightly worried that it might be too much for her but actually we all had a very pleasant afternoon.  Sue’s lunch of roast lamb with all the trimmings was really nice and as Sue had baked all morning, there was a variety of desserts to choose from.  Gooseberry crumble and custard, upside down pineapple cake and a home baked Victoria sponge.  Phil and the folks were in their element as they all have a particularly sweet tooth.  Even I had a small bowl of the crumble.   Phil was happy because he not only got his dinner cooked for him but he also got to watch the whole of the Grand Prix from start to finish.  I guess it was just after 4pm by the time we got back to the caravan which was freezing.  Everyone was so full up and nobody fancied tea but when I went to check on mum and dad a bit later in the evening they were having coffee and a slice of Sue’s cake which she had wrapped up for them to take home.

Monday morning didn’t start well for me.  I was in the wide awake club at 3.15am and eventually got up at quarter to seven to make a cup of tea, only to find that we didn’t have any teabags.  I had no option but to get the spare key and sneak into the caravan next door.  Thankfully mum and dad were still in bed so I got in and out without disturbing them.  I made my tea using the last of the milk and left Phil to look after the old folks while I headed to MK.  The traffic was horrendous the whole way there and it took me 90 minutes to get to Newport Pagnell.  It reminded me that I have to leave Overstone by 7am or otherwise after 9am but then again I don’t suppose I will be making this journey for too much longer.

First stop was a quick mug of tea with Sue and then I had to go to Wolverton to pick up my laptop from the PC Fix man, David.  He gave me a demo and it does seem much faster.  It wasn’t cheap though, £70 but we use this laptop all the time when we go away, so to me, it was worth it.  The main reason for going to MK was to sort out the OB flat.  First I had to pick up some stuff from the GP flat and then I made my way to Oldbrook. I stopped off on the way to buy gas and electric for the meters and it was tipping it down when I got to the flat.  I was pleased to see that the gardener had been and I was also pleased to see that the professional cleaners had been in.  I found some bits they’d missed so I did end up throwing bleach around in the kitchen and I also hovered upstairs and down. I had thought that I would have to repaint a few walls but it didn’t look too bad after bleaching here and there and I got away with just touching up with white emulsion.  It is not perfect but I really can’t bring myself to repaint again after only 6 months. Sue had volunteered to gloss for me but I don’t think it needs it.  My last job was moving the rubbish sacks to the pavement ready for collection the following day, a dirty job and not pleasant in the rain.

I kind of invited myself to Sue’s for lunch today but she didn’t seem to mind and we had leftovers from Sunday which worked well. I was actually quite hungry because I didn’t have any breakfast.   Phil had had quite a busy day to; he too drove over to MK as we’d arranged for mum and dad to have coffee with Molly & Tom, Harriet’s grandparents and my ex-in-laws.  Bet & George went on holiday with them a few times and were quite close at one time.  They hadn’t seen them for a few years so it was nice that they had a chance to catch up.   Mum had some 2-4-1 vouchers for Burger King and so this is where Phil took them for lunch.   I don’t think they were very impressed and they said they much prefer McDonalds which is something they only have once in a blue moon.  They are not really fast food kind of people.

I got back to Overstone and found them settled with tea and chocolate in front of the telly and the gas fire.  What a horrible day it has been today.  If I didn’t already have an agenda, I would have been sorely tempted to have a duvet day but alas it wasn’t to be.

And so that covers the weekend and the start of the week.   I am not really sure of plans for tomorrow.  Phil’s mum tells me that the weather is rain all week which is not good.  We are already feeling the cold in the caravans in the morning and early evenings which does mean that winter is well and truly on its way.   Thank goodness I have a proper house with gas central heating that I can move into any time I want.  Well any time that is, after Phil’s mum and dad go home.  I can’t wait.
